If there should be an occurrence of Blake Ltd, it very well may be seen that the organization follows a solitary proclamation for benefit and misfortune and extensive salary articulation. It very well may be seen that the embraced proclamation of monetary position flopped in the arrangement of the advantages as non-current and current resources. Along these lines, it should be recorded in the announcement of progress in investors value. In addition, the order of account cost should be done as costs and should be considered before the computation of benefit before charge. Age and the Application Process Youth Considerations COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog
Age and the Application Process Youth Considerations COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog I apologize in advance for the length of this entry, however I think it is important as the questions addressed come up quite frequently. I wrote it while on a long train ride recently. If you are still in school or have less than two years of work experience, this entry should provide some helpful information and insight. Each application season one of the most common inquires we receive is something along the lines of the following: âI see that your Web site notes that the average age of a new student at SIPA is 27 but I am young and motivated and wish to apply to your program. I believe that I am a wonderful fit for SIPA and have performed well in school and have participated in activities outside the classroom. Can you provide advice on how as a young applicant I can put together a competitive application? Further, as a younger applicant, is it worth my time to apply to your program?â This question is often accompanied by a résumé, a list of activities/accomplishments, or a personal story about commitment to the intended field of study. Let me start by stating that the Admissions Committee looks for the same thing all applicants, regardless of age. We seek to answer two basic questions when reading applications: 1) Is the applicant prepared/capable of performing well in our rigorous curriculum? 2) Is the applicant a good fit for our program? This roughly breaks into whether the application as a whole provides a clear idea of what an applicant wants from our program, what s/he will add to our program, and the contribution s/he hopes to make after leaving our program. Our goal is to admit applicants who are able to address the points above in a convincing manner, regardless of age. However, to provide some context let me elaborate on some of the characteristics concerning our typical applicant pool. Roughly 70% of those that apply to our program are 25 years of age or older. These individuals usually have 2-3 years worth of full time work experience. Those who are able to focus full time on work after leaving school have a few things in their favor. One is the ability to contribute professional experience to the classroom environment at SIPA. In a professional program like ours, faculty will often ask students to integrate their personal experience into classroom work and assignments. Two, full time work helps individuals to learn more about what they want to do, and equally as important, what they do not wish to do. Thus, applications from those who have been out of school for a few years allow an applicant to speak from experience and not just desire and short term experiences such as internships. Because of the value of experience, applicants that apply during their senior year of college or those with little work experience certainly increase the chance of being admitted if the résumé shows a history of interesting experiences. To state it another way, we are looking for applicants that are unusually mature compared to others in the same age group. Examples of such experience/abilities can include: Internships Volunteer Work Student Leadership Study Abroad or time spent working/volunteering abroad The ability to speak multiple languages Focused academic/professional projects A gap year between high school and college, or during college In sum, we are looking for experiences outside of the classroom that help to demonstrate maturity and focus and as a result will create a rich learning environment at SIPA. Just as our students wish to learn from faculty members with experience, our faculty look for students who will be able to create synergy in the classroom and increase the value of group projects that are integrated into our curriculum. Regarding preparation for our core curriculum, we do pay particular attention to quantitative training/experience. The reason for this is that our core curriculum requires a full year of economics, a quantitative analysis class, and a financial management course. We feel that in order to succeed in these courses, applicants need some previous experience or demonstrated ability with quantitative methods. This can be demonstrated through coursework, professional experience, and standardized testing. Courses in the following areas can help to demonstrate quantitative competence: Mathematics Statistics Quantitative Analysis Economics Science/Engineering coursework Some younger applicants will also ask about the relevance of academic major/minor. The Admissions Committee is more concerned with fit and competence than academic major, but it is true that young applicants with a major that is seemingly unrelated to the proposed field of study at SIPA face stronger scrutiny in the admission process. Thus, young applicants with a major that is somewhat related to the proposed field of study at SIPA are more likely to receive favorable consideration by the Committee. Let me address a few other common follow up questions from younger applicants. âIs it possible for you to tell me my chance of being admitted by reviewing my materials before I apply?â We are unable to tell anyone their chance of being admitted because the admission process is relative. Each year hundreds of applicants apply and thus the pool is different each year. There is also turnover in the Admission Committee each year. The best thing you can do is closely review our FAQ page and put together the most competitive application possible. A competitive application is one where all of the parts fit together. By this I mean your personal statement, letters of recommendation, résumé, etc. should all combine to tell the story of why an education at SIPA will allow you to accomplish your goals and how your experience to date has prepared you to succeed in our program. As a younger applicant, is it worth my time to apply? In one sense there is never a bad time to apply to SIPA. If you think you are ready and you want to go for it, nothing should stop you. One reason I say this is that the Admission Committee does not look down upon or penalize applicants that are denied who choose to reapply at a later time. As a matter of fact, the Committee sometimes encourages applicants that are denied to reapply at a later time. Admission to SIPA in quite competitive and often times the Committee will encourage applicants to pursue additional experience or coursework and reapply. Do you treat domestic and international applicants differently in the admissions process? Just like the Admissions Committee looks for the same qualifications in an applicant regardless of age, we look for the same things regardless of whether a student is domestic or international. Of course applicants that do not speak English as a native language must submit an English langauge test result. The Committee also understands that domestic applicants may achieve higher scores on the GRE. This is one reason we do not publish average GRE scores. Each applicant is different and we do not have any GPA or test cutoffs or recommendations. Many international applicants will also state something like the following: I think the Committee should understand that in my country a Masters degree is required to apply for jobs, and yet your program prefers applicants to have professional experience. It is hard for me to get professional experience in my country without a graduate degree. Does the Committee take this into consideration? The Committee does understand that this âCatch 22â exists, however we are concerned most with creating the best learning environment possible at SIPA. Our advice is to try to get as much experience as you can outside the classroom while pursuing your undergraduate degree. In the end please realize that the Committee does not set a limit on the number of people we will admit from certain age groups. We simply look for the most qualified applicants. The reality is that the majority of those that apply have experience and it is thus statistically more difficult for those with little or no experience to gain admission. Each year 5-10% of those that enroll in our program do come directly from college so a small percentage is able to convince the Committee of preparedness for our program. If you feel you are ready, please do apply. There is no downside to doing so because we will not penalize you if you choose to reapply at a later time.

Nutritional Nutrition And Dietary Preferences - 850 Words
Other than veterinary bills, food is the largest expense for pet owners, leading to the growth of a billion dollar industry that produces over 10 million tons of pet food annually (Grum, 2016). A great deal of money goes into research to examine feline nutrition and dietary preferences. In an article published on the Forbes website, John McQuaid (2015) a journalist and book author, proposed that catsââ¬â¢ ability to taste bitterness, and inability to taste sweetness explains ââ¬Å"why cats are such picky eaters.â⬠With the growing pet population in the U.S., insight into feline diet requirements and preferences helps both pet food companies and pet owners provide more nutritious, balanced food options for domestic cats. Vitamin A, arachidonic acid, taurine, and arginine cannot be synthesized by cats and must be obtained from the diet. Arachidonic acid is a fatty acid, without it, felines may experience reproductive failure and difficulty clotting blood, making it difficult to heal wounds(Zaghini Biagi, 2005). Taurine is an amino acid found as a free compound in animal tissues. A taurine deficiency in cats can lead to blindness as the retina degenerates (Zaghini Biagi, 2005). Arginine is also an amino acid, and plays a role in releasing hormones and healing wounds (without sufficient arginine, cell cells have trouble dividing, which becomes a problem when damaged cells need to be replaced or repaired). Essay On The Baroque Art Period Example For Students
Essay On The Baroque Art Period Throughout history all cultures have been influenced by music. Since the Baroque period music has evolved and changed to meet the needs of the composers, listeners and of the culture as well. Ever since the monolithic chant of the previous millennia the western musical tradition been a mirror to the turmoil and the triumph in the European society. Influenced by religion, nationalism, geography, living conditions, imperialism, pragmatics, social mores, traditions, etc? western music has evolved into a mighty being that still will endure for centuries. Before the Baroque era in music there were many forms of western music. Most of this music was monophonic, sung in chant used mostly for religious purposes. During the previous millennia most music was sung in chant form with very little accompaniment, save a harp or a violin. In these times music was a simple art, sung by the people to praise the Lord. Eventually polyphonic music developed, first starting as monophonic chant sung in thirds and fifths, and later contrapuntal music was created. During this time the music notation system was standardized, originally a modified Greek system; music notation evolved into the notation that is used today. Having the use of music notation set the foundation for Baroque music and for all music after that. In the late sixteenth century and early seventeenth century the Baroque style of music started in Italy. Italy, where the renaissance started, was able to create a new type of music rich in feeling, but less intricate than much of the previous renaissance music that was centered towards the north (France and the area now occupied by the Netherlands). New ideas, like interplay between the various instruments in an orchestra, became prevalent, unlike the monophonic music of previous years. As new instruments were incorporated into orchestras and compositions became increasingly more instrumental interplay had an increasing new role in the new baroque music. Claudio Monteverdi was a pioneer in the field of music at this time. His new operas contained many instances on interplay and sudden contrasts in feeling. As the seventeenth century progressed base parts in music became increasingly more important as the new basso continuo, idea formed. In the basso continuo soprano and alto voices in the music would be constructed on a platform of bass chords that gave meaning and structure to the music. During the Baroque period new forms of presenting music were invented. The cantata and oratorio were created as new forms of vocal pieces. Both of these forms had repeating phrases that structured the pieces with minimal orchestral accompaniment. New forms of music were written in continuous contrapuntal form with no distinguishable movements, the most famous of which was the fantasia. Other forms such as the sonata had many homophonic and contrapuntal movements that contrasted witheach other. There were many pieces that were a theme and variations called a passacaglia. The concerto was a solo instrument that played against an orchestra that differed on many musical, rhythmical and dynamic levels. The concerto was one of the most important forms of music that came out of the Baroque period. During the Baroque period there were many new influential composers. These composers included the Italian composers Alessandro Scarlatti, Arcangelo Corelli Domenico Scarlatti, and Antonio Vivaldi; the Italian-Frenchman Jean Baptiste Lully; the English composers Henry Purcell; and the French composer Jean Philippe Rameau. Towards the end of the century, music became more fluid and romanticized. The ideas of contrasting movements gave way to pieces that more or less the same general musicality and character all the way through. Towards the end of the Baroque period, the great composer J. S. Bach shined and wrote some of the best Baroque pieces ever written, still Baroque in style, but giving way to the new classical period. During the mid eighteenth century there was a reaction to the Baroque style of music. People were tired of the ridged counterpoint that governed the baroque music. .ua6513a6098dc428d815eb2202bd283c9 , .ua6513a6098dc428d815eb2202bd283c9 .postImageUrl , .ua6513a6098dc428d815eb2202bd283c9 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ua6513a6098dc428d815eb2202bd283c9 , .ua6513a6098dc428d815eb2202bd283c9:hover , .ua6513a6098dc428d815eb2202bd283c9:visited , .ua6513a6098dc428d815eb2202bd283c9:active { border:0!important; } .ua6513a6098dc428d815eb2202bd283c9 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ua6513a6098dc428d815eb2202bd283c9 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ua6513a6098dc428d815eb2202bd283c9:active , .ua6513a6098dc428d815eb2202bd283c9:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ua6513a6098dc428d815eb2202bd283c9 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ua6513a6098dc428d815eb2202bd283c9 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ua6513a6098dc428d815eb2202bd283c9 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ua6513a6098dc428d815eb2202bd283c9 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ua6513a6098dc428d815eb2202bd283c9:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ua6513a6098dc428d815eb2202bd283c9 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ua6513a6098dc428d815eb2202bd283c9 .ua6513a6098dc428d815eb2202bd283c9-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ua6513a6098dc428d815eb2202bd283c9:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: What is Art? Argumentative EssayInstead new composers chose to compose a new form of music that was happy and jubilant to mirror the times of great exploration and hope for European society. New music, like the rococo written by the French composer Fran? Ã §ois Couperin showed the new jubilance in music. This new music was broken into several contrasting movements with different conversations and phrase. Music became more like a happy dance during this period. During the classical period tonality was brought to new heights. New complex harmonic textures were used that facilitated the use of new tones and chords within a key. Like in the Baroque era, the concerto and sonata were used as art forms. In the Classical period the symphony and string quartet were added as new acceptable art forms. Most of these forms included three or four contrasting movements that ended in a finale that brought closure to the work, ending in the chord of the key the work was written in. As new instruments were developed, new arrangements were written to incorporate these instruments in new music. New compositions only for wind instruments were written at this time, a phenomena almost unheard of in previous times. Towards the end of the classical period the focus of new composing centered on the Viennese classical school. Out of this new school of composing came such great composers as Franz Joseph Hayden and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. During this time opera lost a lot of its musical intensity and became a series of arias that showed off the singing talent of individual soloists, as opposed of that of the whole group. This tradition would later change with the advent of the Romantic period. The Romantic period started in Europe as a reaction to the jubilant happiness of the classical era. During the nineteenth century there was a lot of tension in Europe as the forces of Nationalism and Militarism gripped Europe. There had been changes in Europe since the advent of Classicism. There were many mighty revolutions like the one that started in France in 1789 and spread. These revolutions made for the age of liberalism vs. conservatism. These events put a new fire into the nineteenth century and made for a new age. One of the major musical forms of the romantic period was the Opera. German composers such as Wagner wrote great operas with a growing emphasis on fluid orchestral parts. New romantic operas were known to last over five hours with long, fluid and powerful lines. Many operas written by German composers and most of the operas written by Wagner instilled German pride and increased an ever growing feeling of nationalism and anti-Semitism. In France opera became more sentimental and simplistic. As in Germany the focus of the opera began to shift towards the choral and to the orchestra. Often the orchestras had large ensembles to show the grandeur of the age. Bizet and Faure were two of the more famous French opera composers. In Italy the operas that were written were more marcatto and joyful. Composers such as Rossini used much rhythmic energy, using various staccato phrases to achieve a more buoyant opera. Later towards the end of the nineteenth century the composer Verdi made more of an orchestral significance and wrote opera that was more fluid. During the nineteenth century the symphony form changed a lot, teeter-tottering between musical styles. Many people were thinking should music have a theme? This was debated throughout the century. As the century progressed, the symphony became the predominant form of musical expression. The beginning of the century started out with Tchaikovskys 1812 symphony. This great feat of romanticism by many is considered one of the centurys best works. Like many composers of that time, his fluid and romantic tones amazed listeners. Smetana in Mein Vaterland expressed the nationalism in Bohemia. He was one of the first great Czeck (Bohemian) composers. In Russia, Moldovski, Rimkey-Korsekov (Arabian Knights) and others made for a great resurgence of nationalistic pride in Mother Russia. .u59c9b216a9940a5bbecb1358fef8ade9 , .u59c9b216a9940a5bbecb1358fef8ade9 .postImageUrl , .u59c9b216a9940a5bbecb1358fef8ade9 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u59c9b216a9940a5bbecb1358fef8ade9 , .u59c9b216a9940a5bbecb1358fef8ade9:hover , .u59c9b216a9940a5bbecb1358fef8ade9:visited , .u59c9b216a9940a5bbecb1358fef8ade9:active { border:0!important; } .u59c9b216a9940a5bbecb1358fef8ade9 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u59c9b216a9940a5bbecb1358fef8ade9 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u59c9b216a9940a5bbecb1358fef8ade9:active , .u59c9b216a9940a5bbecb1358fef8ade9:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u59c9b216a9940a5bbecb1358fef8ade9 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u59c9b216a9940a5bbecb1358fef8ade9 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u59c9b216a9940a5bbecb1358fef8ade9 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u59c9b216a9940a5bbecb1358fef8ade9 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u59c9b216a9940a5bbecb1358fef8ade9:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u59c9b216a9940a5bbecb1358fef8ade9 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u59c9b216a9940a5bbecb1358fef8ade9 .u59c9b216a9940a5bbecb1358fef8ade9-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u59c9b216a9940a5bbecb1358fef8ade9:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Art Appreciation Ch. 4.3Great composers like Paganini, Brahms, Schubert, Sibelius and Camille Saint-Saens wrote great virtuosi music unheard until that the time. Because of the expanding world of music, the rules changed and fragmentation started as new great music changed the globe. The idea that music was not just a song with themes, but more like a poem, was given by Gustav Mahler who wrote whole boisterous symphonies showing the greatness and brevity of the human soul, all with no rhyme or reason to it. Towards the end of the century composers such as Debussy used traditional forms plus the episodic use of changes in tempi and changes in thematic character. The beginning of this century was characterized by the amazing brilliance of Stravinski in the Firebird. in the Twentith century after World War I, a new feeling of loss of identity was felt. Older composers like Prokliev and Stravinsky showed great change, switching from a neo-classical style bringing chaos into their music after the war. Newer composers like the German Gustav Holst showed great chaos in their music by using strong, fragmented rhythms and dissident harmonies. Shostocovich brought the disunity of music to new heights, while commenting musically on his countrys political and economic situation during and after World War II. After the war, new ideas like minimalism lead by Glass and Reich and electronic music lead by Stockhausen, have pervaded into classical music, pushing the classical world to new boundaries. In conclusion, western classical music has evolved since its beginnings in the previous millennia. This music has changed from dainty harmonies to raucous twelve-tone melodies. The music of the Western world has been influenced by and has changed the world as we know it.

It is a privilege to be asked to write on such an important topic in the world. If you are willing to take this challenge, here are some tips to help you when writing reflective essays.Self-reflection is a very valuable tool for you to use in your life and for you to use for others. However, it can become a nuisance if you are not careful. When writing reflective essays, try to use the technique of 'mindmap' to help you out. You may have heard of it but did you know how effective it is?Mindmap is a visualization technique and is very useful in helping you to write reflective essays. When you write on the paper using the pen and paper with the thoughts that are in your mind, you can quickly visualize the entire paper in your mind. You can have different ways of representing your thoughts and views. If you have someone to do the drawing for you , just ask them to show you how they would like to see the whole document. It is important to leave space for imagination and expression of your thoughts. There are two styles of thinking that are more common than others. One is the analytical thinking and the other is the intuitive thinking. Both are useful in different ways. The analytical way is based on facts and based on logic, while the intuitive way is based on feelings and intuition. While analytical thinking can be helpful in helping you determine whether a specific subject matter is worth discussing, it is not the best way to go about it. Having an intuitive way can help you in determining what you should write on an essay. A good way to deal with things is to have both analytical and intuitive ways. Analytical thinking can tell you whether you want to discuss a specific subject or not while intuitive thinking can tell you if it is worth discussing. When writing reflective essays, you can use both analytical and intuitive thi nking. Use both to decide which thoughts are most useful for the topic at hand. Even though analytical thinking can give you clarity on what to say, using intuitive thinking will help you in deciding if it is worthwhile.

Women Essay Example For Students
Women Essay In Architecture Of what historic and contemporary concern is it that the architectureprofession has been, and continues to be, strongly male dominated in Australia(currently 90% of registered architects in NSW are men). Ideally, whatproportion of the profession should women occupy and why? From the start ofhuman history, we always experience certain level of inequality between sexes. It can be seen everywhere around the world and is a concern to everyone, bothmen and women. This inequality is an important issue within the workforce ofmany professions, such as being an architect, landscape architect, city plannersand designers within the built environment. Industrial revolution is the onsetfor women to become segregated from home, creating greater spatial division toimpact on gender roles. There is common concept between the relationship ofpublic and private space with male and female as described by Kate Lyons. This model represents the suburbanisation occurring in the late 19thcentury and the early 20th century. Many suburban women are forced within theirdaily activities due to the constraints on accessibility and mobility inlow-density suburbs and lead to a feeling of being isolated from the inner city. We will write a custom essay on Women specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now These constraints of this gender role affect the womens ability in the broaderprofessions within the built environment, as they were restricted at home. Architects do not like to employ women in their offices; contractorsdo not like to build from their plans; people with money to spend do not like toentrust its expenditure to a woman. This is probably due to the fact thatwomen are kept at home without knowing much of the outside world; the designprofessions have intrigued women into marginal roles. Architects and othersimilar professional fields have perceived women not as profession but aspassive clients. From these, women are users of the designed builtenvironment as there are only few to have the opportunity to design them. Thisforces women to adapt to the way environments have been designed (by men). Thereis a concern where many women architects, landscape architects, planners, builders and designers such as Catharine Beecher, Louise Bethune. Eileen Gray,Julia Morgan, and others are not formally identified with professions. Many oftheir works have been credited to their male colleagues. Another concern is thatthere is a lack of s ensitivity towards womens needs within the builtenvironment. Design strategies and schemes often fail to consider women as adisadvantage group with exclusive needs, many of these needs are inadequatelymet or even un-met. This was evident in several Local Environmental Plans andDevelopment Control Plans of the Sydney Metropolitan area that had notidentified women as a disadvantage group to be included amongst the handicappedand elderly in design issue. Having considered womens issues within the builtenvironment, in concluding one must ask are the fundamentals of professions ofthe built environment gender biased? Whilst the outcomes of these are genderbiased, the fundamentals of planning require subsequent analysis in order toresolve the question. not only do men and women view a common worldfrom different perspectives, they view different worlds as well. Theissues raised are not subject to strictly to women, but men also experience themthough with less intensity. In addressing these issues a gender sensitiveenvironment will be beneficial to all. Nantucket essays
Nantucket essays Nathaniel Philbricks In the Heart of the Sea, starts off by introducing the main characters from Nantucket Island. Quakers dominated the island both economically and culturally. This included Thomas Nickerson, a fourteen-year-old boy that feels pleased for the fact that he is going to sail in the Essex accompanied with his friends Ray, Coffin and Ramsdell. In this book, George Pollard play the role of the captain of the Essex while Owen Chase takes over as first mate. When they left the island, they crew was all excited to start hunting for oil, but what they didnt know was what there futures would bring them. During the successful months of whaling, a gigantic angry whale, which was in the process to be hunted, attacks the sail and sinks the ship. It becomes a nightmare to all the crew. All those days of sailing, and all that oil earned were lost. The thing that occupied the crews mind was surviving. When they were at sea in there life boats, they decided to plan how much food and water they would drink a day. Weeks had passed and men had died. They stopped at an island and found nothing. Therefore, they decided to keep sailing. Fights would break out since some of the surviving crewmember would steal each others food and water. This often led to cannibalism. The needs for water were greater than food. The crew had not really thought out that there life was more important than going out to whale hunt and risk there lives. On February 25, 1821, Chase, Nickerson, and Lawrence arrived to a port in Chile. The rest of the crew had died or got lost. ...

Personal statement Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 1
Personal statement - Essay Example I have many positive personal qualities, I settle in a new place like a duck takes to water and this trait of mine will also help me work with new people and I completely look forward to it. I have also been participating in a lot of extracurricular activities and I am sure that this is going to be a boon for me as well. Right from a very young age I have known that managing resources effectively can change our lives. There are people who squander available resources and as a result, they fail to achieve what they have always wanted to. On the other hand, there are many people who have very limited resources available to them but they make the most of their resources and as a result, they overachieve. I have been arduously working on improving my management skills. Soundpond International Co Ltd was my first company and I learnt a lot of great things working there. It is a textile company which taught me how to negotiate with clients and how to secure orders; this is a very important skill which only a few people possess. I met with European and American clients while working for Soundpond, and it was a very instructive experience as some clients were easy to talk to and convince whereas some others not so. I also have experience of working in the banking sector. HSBC Bath South gate was the organization where I worked as a banker, and it was great meeting new people and learning banking; it was a very enriching experience indeed. Human resource management is of extreme importance. Managers who guide people effectively tend to achieve their targets on a more regular basis than managers who fail to steer people successfully. Human resource management consists of several different things; motivating the employees is, arguably, the most important part of human resource management. Employees tend to deliver results when they are motivated and happy with what they do. It is also important to understand and work towards solving the problems of the employees so as to ensure that they do not affect their productivity. Communicating with the people effectively is of prime importance; he/she who fails to communicate would never achieve the desired results. I have been working on improving my language skills for quite some time now; I got a ranking of 7.5 in IELTS which is considered to be really good. I have been staying in the UK for the last 5 years and this is another factor which has made my language so much better. Time management is a very important skill; unfortunately, there are many people across the globe who consistently struggle to manage their time effectively. Luckily, I have not had any such problems. I have always managed to handle my time advantageously and as a result, I have also achieved a great deal in my life thus far, this quality would take me places and I am positively sure of this. In an organization, it is very important to work in teams and I am a team player. I have always been affable and open to suggestions, which mak es life so much easier, working in teams becomes a walk in the park if you are affable and respect other people. I have always respected both peers and seniors so it becomes really easy for me to ensconce into new groups. Employing new HR techniques is also very important. I have learned a great deal from my University, for instance, I am thorough with fundamentals of organizational theory which is an

My Second - Problem Base Question (EU Law) Essay
My Second - Problem Base Question (EU Law) - Essay Example Arthur would have been compensated for the damage of à £100,000 of the cabbages field. Other dimension is the present situation that 00/1271/EC Directive has not been implemented yet. Brownings Ltd. should put up this situation as an accident that results in damage to Arthurââ¬â¢s fields as well as the premises of Brownings Ltd. By putting the case in such manner will prevent Brownings Ltd. to pay compensation to Arthur. Under this situation both parties has to move towards the insurance organizations for the damages incurred to them. By means of regard to the straight effect of directives, the European court of justice has detained in Marshall v. Southampton AHA that orders can only be imposed against the State since art 249 EC Treaty conveys that a instruction is obligatory upon each Member State to whom it is dealt; it does not present that it trusses persons.à Consequently until United Kingdom actually applies the directive it would be iniquitous to permit it to be imposed against non-governmental bodies.à Arthur is looking for implementing the Directive in opposition to Brownings. As it is provided in the case study that Brownings is a limited organization that have possession of a large chemical works.à If one applies the three Foster criteria that are provision of a government service; under the control of the State; and having exceptional powers; to it, as Brownings obviously is not providing a state service, so due to this reason it would not be an emanation of the State.à Though the European court of justice in Kampelmann has recommended that the Foster criteria may not be cumulative, and therefore offered one of the three criteria is fulfilled, the body will be an emanation of the State.à Conversely, this fraction of the judgment may well be wrong, and it is completely practicable that the three criteria are cumulative.à Yet if they are not cumulative, it is doubtful that

Ethical And Legal Issues In The Field Essay
Ethical And Legal Issues In The Field Essay As frontline health care professionals, nurses face various degrees of challenges and issues during the fulfillment of their duties. The constant pressure to quickly attend to the needs of many patients, while making sure that these services are provided to them efficiently, impels nurses to be always on alert for any issue which they may encounter. Handling ethical and legal issues is already being taught in the classroom and is being supplemented by practical application during internships. Studying ethics as a major concern for nurses supplements the already rigorous training they had undergone when studying the fields concepts themselves. However, new changes in legal and cultural aspects had led to new issues which are not traditionally being taught in nursing schools. For example, nurses may often face dilemmas pertaining to a patients (or his familys) decision to have his life terminated once it is apparent his medical condition is incurable. In addition, nurses also need to deal with maintaining their professional image while constantly interacting with their patients. Interpersonal-oriented careers such as nursing are often vulnerable to extra-professional relationships which may hamper the delivery of otherwise objective diagnosis of medical condition and of giving treatments. Previous researches have pointed out that nurses may take advantage of their roles as health care providers in seeking sexual favors from their patients in return for their quality of care provision. This researcher would like to focus in her study some of the most common ethical and legal issues which nurses face in their profession. She will discuss previous researchers pertaining to these issues. Finally, she will formulate her own conclusions based from the studies cited, supplemented by her own insights based from personal experiences as a nurse. Responsibility of Nurses As health care providers, nurses ethics are also influenced by the concepts of the Hippocratic Oath. Being placed within modern context, this oath stipulates that health care providers should do all they can in ensuring that their patients are treated well. At the same time, the Oath compels health care workers to act with finesse and avoid behaving in such ways as to besmirch their professions reputation. However, the complexities of modern health care has made it difficult to delineate which actions are ethically sound from the unethical. As shown in studies such as Fry and Jane-Johnstone (2002), the most common dilemmas in nursing at present involve: termination of treatment decisions, abortion, in vitro fertilization, surrogate motherhood, euthanasia and assisted suicide, allocation of scarce resources and treatment of disabled infants and the mentally retarded. As several cases had shown in the past years, handling these issues present no single, encompassing and correct respons e which is applicable to all situations. More complicated issues have even reached to the courts when the parties in a situation disagree with the legal validity of the decisions being made by nurses. Thomson, Melia and Boyd (2006) also point out that, in many cases, nurses do not have complete control over medical and health care decisions: Most nurses are unlikely to be directly responsible for decisions to terminate a pregnancy, terminate a treatment and in the allocation of medical resources. (emphasis by the authors). Yet, nurses are the first health care providers being approached by the kin of the patients involved in those treatment decisions. (Thomson, Melia and Boyd, 2006). As a result, nurses should have a deep grasp of legal and ethical issues so that they can respond accordingly for those issues. At the same time, students focusing about ethical issues in nursing should consider the degree of responsibility the nurse bears in handling patient care, viz-a-viz the doctor or head nurses over-all responsibility. Daly, Speedy and Jackson (2009) detail some legal aspects of health care which nurses must take into critical consideration. According to them, various laws have been made to regulate conduct and wrongdoing with regard to patient safety, nurses liability for civil and criminal negligence in mishandled patient care cases, regulation of patients freedom of movement, facilitating patient consent for their treatments, control over patient property and records, among others. Nurses face liability, in various degrees, if they fail to fully comply with these legal aspects. (Daly, Speedy and Jackson (2009) . Ethics in Nursing Clarifying the broad concepts of nursing ethics, Thomson, Melia and Boyd (2006) suggest students to initially define : a.) the concepts of care within the context of the nursing profession, b.) pointing out the importance of citing specific cases in resolving ethical issues and delineating the relationship between general moral rules and the specific moral decisions. In particular, the researchers point out that nurses should clearly delineate two contrasting demands in health care, namely: the sensitive regard for the unique needs of a personà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦ with recognition of the demands of a particular circumstance and the general duty of care based on contractual and institutional duties and rules. This researcher believes it is important to discriminate between these two aspects of care since this will govern the level of professional relationship between the nurse and the patient. This is important in preventing this relationship from becoming too personal to the point that the nurse is unable to objectively fulfill his or her duties to the patient. In terms of using specific cases to help resolve legal and ethical issues (casuistry), the authors point out that this is helpful in guiding nurses to reach a decision based on previous cases. However, it is still important for them to make their own decisions based on the circumstances of a pa rticular situation. Related to this is the delineation of general moral principles with specific circumstances. This researcher believes that it is important to balance the two when considering a legally and ethically sensitive decision. Breaking away from precedents may cause ambiguity on how similar cases in the future will be handled. On the other hand, excessive reliance on casuistry may hamper nurses from making the correct and relevant decision on a specific situation. In making decisions, it is relevant to go back to the basic ethical concepts applicable to nursing. Finkelman and Kener (2009) detail these concepts as respecting the patients autonomy, practicing beneficence and justice to them, and being truthful to the patients and his/her kin. In sum, a nurse should be able to respect a patients decision to continue or cancel the treatment, even as he/she is able to give him the best care possible in line with the health care principles and the available diagnosis on the patients health. Applying these principles needs some decision-making skills on the nurses part. These skills primarily pertain to interpersonal skills, perceptiveness, moral deliberation and skilled know-how. Conclusion/Recommendation As this paper had shown, nurses face numerous and very challenging issues as they provide health care services to their patients. They need to deal not only with ethical considerations which are specific to nursing, but are now also including law. Based from this discussion, this student believes it is vital for nurses to deeply comprehend nursing ethics and their legal implications. The changing dynamics and needs of health care blur the lines in situations which traditionally require only black-and-white answers, so to speak. Adjusting to these changes requires nurses and nursing students to constantly review previous cases of health care-related problems while foreseeing possible new circumstances in future issues. This may be done during classes or even during review sessions. This situation also requires nurses to modify the way their deal with patients, especially those posing problems. The nurses firmly impose the rules if the patients start crossing the line beyond their welf are.

A Precise Thought on Hunger by Charles Dickens Essay
Great Expectations was published in 1861 when the flowering of the Victorian Age had been at its height. During this period England was afflicted by many problems emanating from the changes in feudal economy that failed to withstand the invasion of growing industries, explosion of population ,emergence of slums, unbridled exploitation and the simmering discontent. The theme involves an unhappy childhood, guilt and imprisonment, ruthlessness of law, the corrupting power of money, and above all, human loneliness. These themes are worked out by means of contrasts and confrontations ââ¬âthe instinctive sense of justice versus the legal system; the outcast versus society; willed isolation against human commitment, inherited fortunes versus personal achievement. In one sense, it would be proper to call the novel a ââ¬Å"snobââ¬â¢s progressâ⬠towards self-realisation. On reading the great novel ââ¬Å"Great Expectationsâ⬠I felt too sympathetic & pity for a little boy called ââ¬Å"pipâ⬠by Charles Dickens. He,from his early childhood had to face and undergone through many circumstances and situations which as if made him stand strong later in his days. The opening description of the death of his brother and sister; To five little stone lozenges, each about a foot and had never taken them out in this state of existence. Gave us a vivid picture of Dickens close observation on the most vital utterance of life that is ââ¬Å"foodâ⬠and ââ¬Å"deathâ⬠. One can understand easily that it was Dickens extreme irritation that made him jot about the prior ââ¬Å"callâ⬠of nature that was ââ¬Å"sufferingsâ⬠. According to Dickens food and human are correlated to eachother. Food/Hunger stands as an identity that makes us work hard so that the minimum bread of ours can be earned. It led us to the hard and harder aspects of life where while going through we come across the utter darkness that is the universal ââ¬Å"truth and reality of mankindâ⬠. Then again the just word ââ¬Å"hungerâ⬠teaches us to explore new ideas & makes us discover things which are buried in the oldest ââ¬Å"urn lying beneath the earthâ⬠. The preconceived dogmas of life calls ââ¬Å"hungerâ⬠as an object that just gave pain & screwed the deeper realism of the worldââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"sob and wailâ⬠. It was Dickens who enhanced and inspired us to think on a word ââ¬Ëhungerââ¬â¢ that is perhaps the most alarming agenda of life. I think it was ââ¬Å"heâ⬠who only fingered us the point of utter grief that actually provided us with relief and became universal. Dickens projected the term ââ¬Å"hungerâ⬠as the reality of humans and psychological civilisation that generally produced an energy /stimulus to work for the betterment of oneself that equally helped the others. According to me ââ¬Å"hungerâ⬠produced a ââ¬Å"juice ââ¬Ëthat provided us with strengths and topped ourself. Yes it gave pain but it also made us complete. One got an opportunity to move on and face things as it is. The portion where we came across the lines ; My thoughts strayed from that question as I looked disconsolately at the fire rose before me in the avenging coals. Also taught us the truth and the pain that directly came out from the expression of a little boy who has just came to this world not too early. He added the word ââ¬Å"foodâ⬠into a column that showed us that for him ââ¬Å"foodâ⬠is a material that is too hard to earn. As he is just a little one and have not come across the harsh reality of life ,donââ¬â¢t you think that he has unknowingly fallen into the so called ââ¬Å"cradleâ⬠of ill desires. Was he not being drived into the bitter beliefs? His age was too little to be termed as a ââ¬Å"suffererâ⬠. Last but not the least I would like to conclude that very beautifully Dickens compared the two terms ââ¬Å"Sufferâ⬠& ââ¬Å"Hungerâ⬠together. As one(hunger) stands for an epistemology of knowledge ,desire, lust and longing and the other( suffer) stood for the ultimate thet can never be avoided nor ignored but has to be faced,as we the ââ¬Å"mere human beings are a framed puppet in the hands of them,â⬠The Almightyâ⬠. Thank you.
